As many of you know, last year we made changes to the hours that we covered our small animal emergencies at our clinics. Our doctors now cover emergencies from close of business at 5:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday in both New Ulm and Mankato. On Saturday, they cover emergencies from close of business at 1:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. And on Sundays, they cover emergencies from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. After 10:00 p.m., we refer all emergencies to the Blue Pearl 24-hour Emergency Clinic in Eden Prairie. The decision to eliminate emergency coverage after 10:00 p.m. was made due to concerns about the security of our doctors alone at our clinics late at night. We have had some frightening incidents where it was necessary to involve the police, and we could not continue to put our staff at risk.
There are two new changes to our small animal emergency service starting January 6, 2018. From Friday at close of business through Sunday at 10:00 p.m. we will have only one doctor on emergency duty for both our Mankato and New Ulm offices. On an alternating basis, one doctor from either Mankato or New Ulm will be covering the emergencies at their base office. To assist with workload, we will also now have a dedicated Certified Veterinary Technician on call to assist the doctor. This is something we have not had in the past. We will continue to cover emergencies in both locations Monday through Thursday until 10:00 p.m.
Hopefully, these changes will provide security to our staff while continuing to provide you, the client, with local emergency care during the hours when it is most needed.
